Some things only make sense backwards.

There are so many things in life that don't make sense while we're actually living through them. We wonder why something happened, why someone came into our life, why something we wanted didn't work out, or why we had to go through a season we never would have chosen for ourselves. And usually, when we're right in the middle of it, we don't have the answers. But life has a funny way of making more sense when we look back.

Sometimes it's years later when we finally see how one thing led to another. We notice the person who showed up at exactly the right time, the tiny sign we almost missed, the door that closed and quietly changed our direction, or even the parts of ourselves we found because life didn't go the way we thought it would.

That's the idea behind BACKWARDS, and it's why the journal itself was designed a little differently. The word actually begins on the back cover and wraps around the book until it finishes on the front. When you're holding it, you can't see the whole word at once. You have to turn it over and look back to understand what you're seeing. And maybe that's a little bit like us.

We don't always get to see the whole story while we're living it. Sometimes we're just collecting pieces without knowing yet where they belong. We write things down because we don't want to forget them, because we're trying to understand them, or simply because there's something inside of us that needs somewhere to go. Then one day we can come back to those words and realize how much has changed, or finally understand something we couldn't understand before.

BACKWARDS is a place for all of it. The things that make sense now, the things that don't, the signs that seem to keep finding their way to you, and the pieces of your story you may understand differently someday.

Because sometimes you have to look back to see just how far you've come.
